HUGE BUDGET LOSSES FOR US ALL:

What is wrong with these GOP leaders in Congress and White House?

Heather Cox Richardson July 5, 2025 adds insights into the mountain of horrifying impacts of the MAGA's Betrayal Budget and Plunder Budget and Fascist Police State Budget bill

A few highlights:
Prison labor
Truckle down economics has been proven over and over again to be a ficton/lie/tool-of GOP-to-steal-from-the-public-and-give-to-the-mega-rich-donors
The MAGA Budge bill may be least popular bill in history-or close

At the bill’s signing, Trump harked back to the idea Republicans have embraced since 1980, claiming that tax cuts spark economic growth. He said: “After this kicks in, our country is going to be a rocket ship economically.”

In fact, tax cuts since 1981 have not driven growth, and a study by the nonpartisan Penn Wharton Budget Model of the University of Pennsylvania projects that the measure will decrease national productivity, known as gross domestic product (GDP), by 0.3% in ten years and drop the average wage by 0.4% in the same time frame.

From 1981 to 2021, tax cuts moved more than $50 trillion from the bottom 90% to the top 1%, and Penn Wharton projects the top 10% of households will receive about 80% of the total value of this law, too. Those in the top 20% of earners can expect to see nearly $13,000 a year from the bill, while those in the bottom 20% of households will lose about $885 in 2030 as the pieces of the law take effect.

Past tax cuts have also driven budget deficits and increases in the national debt, and like them, this law will increase the deficit by about $3.4 trillion over the next ten years, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The CBO also projects that interest payments on that debt will cost more than $1 trillion a year.

But it is clear administration officials are well aware that polls showed Americans disapproving of the measure more than approving by the huge gap of around 20 points. They are now trying to sell the law to voters.

According to Aaron Reichlin-Melnick of the American Immigration Council, the law gives ICE more funding than the Federal Bureau of Investigations; Drug Enforcement Administration; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; U.S. Marshals Service; and Bureau of Prisons combined. In fact, Reichlin-Melnick told Democracy Now!, the law will make ICE the largest federal law enforcement agency “in the history of the nation.”

Scholars of authoritarianism are sounding the alarm over the new law. Timothy Snyder warned that the extensive concentration camps that Trump has called for and the new measure will fund will be tempting sites for slave labor. Undocumented immigrants make up 4% to 5% of the total U.S. workforce. In agriculture, food processing, and construction, they make up between 15% and 20% of the workforce.

Immigration is an area where a U.S. President can exercise virtually unchecked legal coercive power, especially if backed by a Supreme Court majority and corrupted Department of Justice. Now Congress has given ICE unprecedented resources—much of this windfall to be used for graft with private contractors Trump patronizes, but lots of to hire street agents willing to mask themselves and do whatever they are told against residents and fellow American citizens. [Administration officials] are not interested only in rounding up undocumented immigrants,” she wrote to Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo. “They will step up using ICE and DOJ enforcements…to harass Democrats [and] citizen critics, and subvert future elections if they can.”

Robert Reich said this (with updated and edits):

Robert Reich here. Today, the HOUSE is voting on Donald Trump's big, ugly budget megabill—the most cruel, harmful, and flat-out immoral piece of legislation I've ever seen.

It's name should be

For every millionaire household getting a tax break, 19 Americans would be stripped of their health coverage. As many as 16 million people would lose health insurance. Millions of kids would lose food and nutrition assistance. America's poorest families would lose about $1,600 per year, while the richest would gain about $12,000.

READ this great analysis and post of recommendations for Monday June 30th

My take - passage of this thing while likely is not assured. The sudden  retirements of Senator Thom Tillis (NC) and Rep. Don Bacon (NE-2) is a sign of how hard it is going to be for competitive Rs to sell this big, ugly, monstrosity back home. Senate Rs have crapped all over the House Rs. Trump just had the worst week of polling of his second term. The bill is polling worse than the tariffs!

The economy is continuing to slow, the deficit is rising, our credit was downgraded, the financial markets hate the bill. Trump’s trade agenda has failed and become a global embarrassment for him. Here’s the Financial Times today:

Actual dollars instead
The green graph above shows the actual money that the top will gain and the loses (red) of the poorest in our society due to this horrific big bad betrayal bill and Billionaire bonus bill

The wealthy DO NOT NEED MORE OF OUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Possible script to consider using for call to senators Curtis and Lee.

I am calling to urge you to vote against the reconciliation bill and to roll back Trump’s terrible and illegal tariffs. Together these actions have raised taxes on all of us and will explode the deficit - things Republicans have always told us they did not believe in.

But your agenda is also causing all of us to “pay more and get less” for every day things including our health care; people to loses their jobs; and the economy to slow - all so you can give your rich donors a huge tax break. Your plans will weaken this great country and are an extraordinary betrayal of everything you promised during the campaign - which was to help people like me, not Elon Musk, get ahead.

Your plans are ones of sabotage, surrender and betrayal and I urge you to abandon them and to work with Democrats to find a better way.

2 - Get The Military Off Our Streets, Fight Trump’s Inhumane Immigration Escalation - Contact your Rep and Senators to demand they fight Trump’s illegal use of the National Guard and Marines in California. Encourage Democrats at all levels of government to a stand with Governor Newsom and the California - for Trump is not just attacking California, he is attacking the rights and freedoms of all of us. See my recent interviews with Joe GarciaLeon Krauze and Senator Chris Van Hollen for more. (WTP.CV addition:  Increase for ICE detention is 45 billion dollars.  That is ~5 times the annual budget of ENTIRE federal prison system (8.3 billion $)

In the coming days I want to work with all of you to do something more explicit about demanding the end of masked, plain clothes “police” snatching people here in America without warrants.

3 - Own The Fourth, The Flag And Patriotism - To keep our momentum going after this weekend’s No Kings events I encourage to explore ways of Owning The Fourth and make our Independence Day an ugly one for our mad wannabe king.

Inspired by the tactics of our Founders, learn about how Hopium members are advancing “resolutions of condemnation” in their communities across the country and consider bringing this initiative to your state, country or city/town. Our resolutions passed in New Mexico this week, others are working to bring them forward - let’s keep the mo’ going everyone!

4 -Volunteer To Help Your State and/or Local Democratic Parties Stand Up Voter Registration Efforts - In the presentation he made to our community on Friday Tom Bonier made a persuasive case that Democrats must once again make partisan voter registration a national priority. State and local Democratic Parties are in the planning stages to take this on. Members of our community should consider contacting their state and local parties and offer to help stand up these vital efforts in the coming months.

For more on the need to make partisan voter registration great again see my recent interview with Jane Kleeb, Nebraska Democratic Party Chair, DNC Vice Chair and President of the Association of Democratic State Committees.

5 - Stand Up For Science - Sign on to the critically important Bethesda Declaration and watch my interview with Stand Up For Science’s Executive Director Colette Delawalla. Signing on to the Declaration is one concrete way you can take action today.

For more on the need to fight Trump’s war on science, research, academia and our public health see my recent interview with noted climate scientist Dr. Michael Mann.

***IMMEDIATE ACTION***WE CAN STILL STOP THE MAGA MURDER BILL [6-30-25]

Another take: The extremely unpopular, Medicaid-slashing, billionaire-enriching version of the MAGA Murder Bill Senate Republicans hope to send back to the House is even worse than the House-passed version, willingly consigning many of their constituents to misery, hunger, and death to partially pay for the largest transfer of wealth in American history and blow up the national debt.

Both versions further transform the US into a police state. Cutting access to healthcare and food frees up $50 billion to finish Trump’s useless southern border wall, $8 billion to hire 10,000 masked ICE gestapo agents to daily round up 3000 immigrants and Americans, and $59 billion to build the concentration camps to hold and then deport them—further destroying our civil rights.

Voting may have already started in the Senate, but there’s still time to contact your Senators, thank them for all opposing the gutting of vital programs our families and communities rely on, and urge them to keep proposing amendments that highlight Republicans’ cruelty and trying to stop its passage however they can. Then call your Representative, who may shortly be voting on the Senate version, and pass along a similar message.
