 Municipal election primary voting information

The elections this year in Utah are to elect people for the most fundamental level of the American democratic system - city councils and city mayor. These are among the most important roles in our country - city councils and mayors work on aspects of our lives that we encounter every day - the funding of our towns; how our towns develop; what many of our taxes are spent on like streets, libraries, parks, paths, law-enforcement,  etc.  People who run for, and are elected to  these offices provide  their time and energy to ensure that we have safe streets, parks, water, and fire protection. These are often jobs without a lot of appreciation, do not pay well, and take a lot of time and energy.  We appreciate their interest in running, and taking the time tonight to meet with us. Logan and Hyrum have municipal power companies, so city council members also help set electricity rates and determine where the electricity comes from.

Municipal elections in Utah are non-partisan. This year Logan has an open mayor’s race, and two city council seats.  Five people are running for mayor, and nine for city council seats. The election being held in August is a primary it will winnow the list of candidates down to two mayoral candidates, and four city council candidates for the November 4 election. In North Logan, five people are running for two seats on the city council, and the primary will eliminate one of the candidates. Six other towns in Cache County are holding primaries this year.  Because of the relatively low turnouts for primary elections held in the summer, your vote matters a lot - a few 10’s of votes may help determine who advances to the general election on November 4.

While these elections are for towns all of the election process is managed by the County Clerk elections office at 179 N. Main Street, Suite 102, Logan, UT, Phone 435-755-1460.  You can drop ballots off at the town offices, but all other election information and process is done at the county office. The staff at this office is very helpful, and will make sure that you are properly registered and can answer any other questions.

The ballots for the primary were mailed out on July 22; the primary ends Tuesday, August 12th at 8 p.m.  The ballot must be IN by August 12 at 8 p.m., so if you have a mail-in ballot, drop it in the post office by August 5 to make sure it arrives in time. Voters may return their ballots at any of the official drop boxes throughout the county prior to polls closing at 8 p.m. Aug. 12. A full list of drop box locations can be found at https://www.cachecounty.gov/elections/ballotdropofflocations.html.

If you did not receive a ballot, or have not yet registered to vote, the thing to do now is to use the early in-person voting which will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 5-8 at the Cache County Administration Building, 179 N Main Street in Logan.   In-person voting on election day on August 12,  will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cache County Event Center, 490 S 500 W in Logan.  Valid voter identification is required for in-person voting.

People who are going to be 18 years old by election day (November 4) can vote in the primary by registering at the early voting site.
